Fly Ahmedabad to Port Blair via Chennai or Kolkata, landing at Veer Savarkar airport by early afternoon. Corbyn’s Cove comes first, then the Cellular Jail — three of the original seven wings survive, along with Savarkar’s cell on the third tier and the gallows. The 5.45 pm light-and-sound show in the courtyard, narrated around the old peepal tree, is the reason to be there at dusk.

A harbour boat runs out to Ross Island — now Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose Dweep — where the British administrative headquarters was abandoned after the 1941 earthquake and the banyan roots have swallowed the church, the bakery and the ballroom. Spotted deer and peacocks wander the ruins. North Bay follows, with a glass-bottom boat over the coral shelf and optional sea walking. Afternoon at the Samudrika Naval Marine Museum.

A private air-conditioned catamaran takes about ninety minutes to Havelock, now Swaraj Dweep. After check-in you have the afternoon at Radhanagar — Beach No. 7, a 2 km white crescent backed by mahua forest and repeatedly rated the best beach in Asia. There is a lifeguard flag system and a strong undertow past the flags; the sunset from the northern end is the one people come for.

A speedboat runs twenty minutes to Elephant Beach, where the coral shelf starts in waist-deep water — snorkelling gear and a guide are included, and the fringing reef here is the easiest in the Andamans to see without diving. Afternoon at Kalapathar on the east coast, a strip of black rock against turquoise that is at its best in the morning light and empty by four.

A forty-minute ferry south to Neil, now Shaheed Dweep — eighteen square kilometres of paddy and banana with three beaches. Bharatpur is the calm swimming and glass-bottom beach beside the jetty, Laxmanpur is where the sun sets, and the Natural Bridge, a coral arch the sea cut out of the rock, is only reachable at low tide. Your guide times the visit to the tide table; there is no way around it.
Highlights
The morning ferry back to Port Blair takes about two hours. If your flight is in the evening we add Chidiya Tapu — the bird sanctuary at the southern tip, best for the sunset viewpoint and the mangrove boardwalk — and the Anthropological Museum. Airport drop three hours before departure; Port Blair check-in is slow and the flight almost always routes through the mainland.

The private catamarans — Makruzz, Green Ocean, Nautika — run to schedule on most days from October to April and are suspended outright when the harbour master posts a weather warning, usually in the south-west monsoon. Cancellation is a real risk in May, June and September. We book the morning sailing rather than the afternoon one, because a cancelled morning ferry can still be re-accommodated the same day.
October to April is the season, with the clearest water for snorkelling from December to March. May to September is the south-west monsoon — heavy rain, rough crossings and frequent ferry cancellations — and we do not sell this itinerary between 15 May and 15 September. Late November is the sweet spot: post-monsoon visibility with pre-Christmas rates.
Yes. The reef starts in waist-deep water, everyone wears a life jacket, and the in-water guide holds you and walks you over the coral shelf. Children from about eight upwards do it comfortably. If you would rather not get in at all, the same trip includes a glass-bottom boat over the same reef at no extra cost.
Indian nationals need no permit for Port Blair, Havelock or Neil — only photo ID at check-in and at every jetty, so carry the original Aadhaar or passport, not a photocopy. Foreign nationals need a Restricted Area Permit, issued on arrival at Port Blair. Baratang and the Jarawa reserve road need a separate forest permit and a convoy slot, which is why it is not in this itinerary.
