Visa on arrival at Ngurah Rai, then your driver takes the ninety-minute road north through Sukawati to Ubud. The villa greets you with a Balinese flower bath and a welcome drink on the deck. Evening free — the Ubud Palace holds a Legong dance performance most nights at 7.30.
Highlights
Start early on the Campuhan ridge walk, a two-kilometre grass spine between two river valleys that is best before eight. Then the Tegalalang rice terraces with their bamboo swings, the Sacred Monkey Forest sanctuary and Tegenungan waterfall. Afternoon free for a couples' massage — Ubud does this better and cheaper than anywhere else on the island.

North to the Kintamani rim for the view across the caldera to Mount Batur and its lake, with lunch at a restaurant on the ridge. On the way back you stop at Tirta Empul, the spring temple where Balinese Hindus queue at the purification spouts, and at a Luwak coffee plantation. Check in at Seminyak in time for sunset at Double Six beach.

The morning opens with a floating breakfast tray in your own pool, which is a Bali cliché for a reason. The day is yours at Seminyak — the beach clubs on Petitenget run from noon. At five you drive south to Uluwatu temple on its 70-metre cliff for the Kecak fire dance at sunset, then down to Jimbaran bay for a grilled seafood dinner with your table on the sand.

A short drive down the Bali Mandara toll road to Nusa Dua, the gated resort strip where the water is reef-protected and calm enough to swim in all day. Check in, then walk the beachfront promenade to the Water Blow, where swell forces up through a limestone gap. The rest of the day is deliberately unscheduled.

Fast boat from Sanur to Nusa Penida, forty minutes across the strait, for the west-coast circuit — Kelingking's T-Rex headland, Broken Beach, Angel's Billabong and Crystal Bay. The roads on Penida are rough and the viewpoints involve steep steps, so wear real shoes. You are back by six for a private candlelit dinner set up on the beach at the resort.

Breakfast and a late check-out where the resort allows it. Ngurah Rai is twenty minutes from Nusa Dua, so there is time for last shopping at Bali Collection. Wood carvings and anything organic must be declared at Indian customs, so keep the receipts.

The crossing takes forty minutes and can be bumpy, and the viewpoints need a steep walk. If either of you gets seasick, tell us and we will swap the day for a Lembongan snorkelling cruise, which is calmer and costs about the same.
Yes, and it is the point of this itinerary. Ubud, Seminyak and Nusa Dua are ninety minutes apart and feel like three different holidays. Your driver moves the luggage, so a change day costs you an hour, not a day.
Very easily in Ubud, which has more vegan cafes than most Indian cities. Seminyak and Nusa Dua have Indian restaurants — Queen's Tandoor and Gateway of India are the two most Gujarati families end up at. The Jimbaran dinner has a grilled vegetarian set if you ask at booking.
January and February, when the rain is heaviest and Penida crossings get cancelled. July and August are dry and beautiful but crowded and dear. May, June, September and October are the sweet spot for both weather and price.
